Now, Did You Know ... ?
When I saw this SNL Christmas number, I immediately thought of our formative semester in Rhetoric 10 with Dale Carrico. Certainly not as provocative nor exquisitely clever as any of Professor Carricos's lectures, the skit with the seductively talented (think Les Liaisons Dangereuses) John Malkovich makes quite a case for parallel. Have a happy holiday.
Itchy, Itchy.
P.S. Professor Carrico and Eryk Morales-Franceschini
... endless thanks.

We are a nation of consumers. And there's nothing wrong with that.
I think I threw up a little.
I don't know if anybody still checks this blog since class is over, but I just thought I'd share this commercial. Um. Yeah. I don't even really know what to say about it.

A Spiegelman Afterthought
Before the semester started, I stumbled upon this article, "Getting in Touch with My Inner Racist," written by Art Spiegelman for Mother Jones. I had forgotten all about it, until just now, while cleaning out my desk to clip all my Rhetoric 10 materials together (a wonderful moment, no?). For those who may be interested in yet another Spiegelmanian personal account of grappling with race and racisms:

Does anybody have a recording of the final lecture that they wouldn't mind sending me? I've been out with the stomach flu and would really appreciate hearing some insight into what Dale had to say about "Precarious Life." I also wouldn't mind reviewing someone's notes if that's possible...Please and thank you!!

Kindred essay
Does anybody know what "[Octavia] Butler's project" means in terms of the prompt? I define it as Butler's "key underlying message." Does anybody have anything different? I trust that Prof. Carrico will be very flexible with our views on what "Butler's project" actually means since the prompt is so vague, but I still want to see what everybody else thinks it is.
Also, does anybody know where I can get a copy of the complete syllabus? The one on Arguere is incomplete; it does not tell us what the graders of the final papers will be looking for (I know we're supposed to follow the four habits) nor does it have anything on the process of challenging the midterms results.

Butler: On Narrative Accounts
Dearest Shannon Meehan (et al), hopefully Butler's discussion of narrative accounts provides connections to certain claims about the 'objective' limitations that blunt accounts of subjective violences: "The account still requires its recipient, and there is still a question of whether I can offer the kind of account that might satisfy the narrative requirements of a full and seamless story. Let's assume that not only in the cases of extreme trauma ... but in the course of life itself there are gaps or fissures in the accounts that we give, and that we have no account to give of why that part of life cannot be recalled or given in narrative form."

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone recorded the lecture on Planet of the Slums or Maus. If so I would really appreciate if I could get a hold of those. They would really help my papers out. I hope everyone is doing well with their work. Thanks to anyone who can help.

OBJECTIVE VIOLENCE
Does anyone have a good definition of "objective violence?" It'd help my paper alot.
Bless your hearts,
Karen.
